Anders Mountain Breakdown

The Broke Mountain Bluegrass Band plays hard driving, high energy bluegrass music.
With one foot firmly rooted in the traditions and structures of bluegrass music and the other foot pressed firmly on the gas pedal, this exciting new band brings a young energy to our country's oldest music. Since the inception of the band in the Spring of 2003, Broke Mountain has been wowing audiences and gaining fans from Oregon to North Carolina After only two months of playing together, Broke Mountain was awarded the prestigious first place award in the 2003 Rockygrass Band Competition in Lyons Colorado, while members of the band also won first place in the mandolin and banjo contests. In the summer of 2004, Broke Mountain released their much celebrated first album "Cabin In the Hills", which contains mostly original material and will surely stand the test of time.

Whether Broke Mountain is playing to a festival audience, a roomful of seasoned bluegrass fans or a crowded bar, these young guns put on an exciting, high energy show that is very fun! Often compared to a young Seldom Scene because of their similar instrumentation, strong harmonies and unique songs, their live shows exude an energy that grabs a hold of seasoned bluegrass fans and newcomers alike. Broke Mountain is able to play and sing impeccable bluegrass music while not taking themselves too seriously and having lots of fun. Quite simply.. their music is infectious- don't miss this band!!
Broke Mountain is made up of Anders Beck on dobro, Travis Book on bass and vocals, Robin Davis on mandolin and vocals, Chad Love on Banjo and Jon Stickley on guitar and vocals.

We are very excited to have these guys play a house concert with us the Sunday before Rockygrass! This will be your chance to catch them in an intimate, all acoustic atmosphere.

Jeff and Vida

September 1, 2005

Check out an mp3 from their Wakarusa set!

The Jeff and Vida Band is one of New Orleans best known acoustic roots act. Performing original material spanning from Appalachian bluegrass to alternative country. Their live performances showcase Vida’s powerful voice, Jeff’s superb picking on mandolin, guitar and banjo, Mike Kerwin’s slap-you-in-the-face bass playing and tight well arranged harmonies. With ballads that sound like they could have been written fifty years ago and raucous barnstorming numbers that keep your feet tapping their live shows are exciting and unique, full of humor, good music and unforgettable songs.

After touring nonstop for the past three years the Jeff & Vida Band have started to gain acclaim and attention on the national level. Their latest album, the award winning ‘The Simplest Plans’ (Binky Records 2002) has earned them a large fan base and a reputation for embodying the spirit of ‘Americana’ music. Now, after thousands of miles and hundreds of shows their hard traveling is finally beginning to pay off. They have recently begun to break into the major club and festival circuit both nationally and internationally and their music is being played regularly on Triple-A radio stations across the country.

Jeff Burke and Vida Wakeman began performing in the bars and clubs of New Orleans in 1998. After gaining a local following they recorded their critically acclaimed debut album, ‘One Horse Town’ (Independent /Binky 2000). With the success of the record they hit the road full time to support the release and bring their music to a wider audience. It wasn’t long before Mike Kerwin joined the band on standup bass in 2001. Their different backgrounds and shared love of American roots music helped them create a unique sound that that fuses blues, country, rock & roll and bluegrass and can only be described as Americana.

True to the American song writing tradition Jeff and Vida keep their songs simple and sincere. Their material draws from most everything except modern day hits. You can tell after hearing their songs that they probably turned the radio off a long time ago. “While Jeff & Vida extend their grizzled tales of murder (“The Law’s Best Friend”), revengeful spite (“Don’t leave the Lights On”), downtrodden luck(“Have Mercy”) and rollicking rockabilly (“Dollar Stops) to their fullest, they also shade plenty of twisty turns into the arrangements.” -Dan Willging, Dirty Linen

Boulder Acoustic Society

Saturday November 5, 2005

In August 2004, Boulder Acoustic Society were the winners at the Notes At 9,000 Emerging Artist Series Competition in Winter Park, Colorado. This honor kick started their career with guidance from an entertainment lawyer, a publicist, a graphic designer and more.

Their debut record, "So Many Stars In the Sky," was release in October of 2004 and quickly sold out of 3,000 copies, a difficult task for a new band. In reference to this record, Brad Weisman from the Colorado Daily said, "...(BAS) creates as pleasant and appealing a listening experience as can be imagined...it lifts the art and soul with dynamic energy that comes from a blend of strong, inventive technique and wry, winning charm."

In March of 2005, BAS was chosen to play a showcase at the South By Southwest Music Conference in Austin, TX, which resulted in a Japanese distribution deal for their first record.

Their interest in the ukulele has lead them to perform all over North America, including California, New York and Nova Scotia. They released their first book of ukulele songs in August of 2005, which allows BAS fans to strum along to their favorite songs.

BAS' second record is due out in January 2006 and will feature producer Sally Van Meter, Darol Anger and Greg Schochet. The release of this record will push BAS out on the road full time, with festival, concert hall and house concert bookings all over the country.

Deadwood Revival

Friday November 18, 2005

Show 8:30 pm

im and Jason met in Atlanta, GA during the mid 90’s. She was a veteran performer in musical theatre and he was a drummer playing with various groups in the local blues, folk, and jam-band scene. They both ended up in the same band (Kim as a doo-wop girl, Jason on drums) and started hanging out between gigs playing guitars and singing Neil Young tunes. Inspired by the pure sound of their harmonies and frustrated with hectic city life, they decided to abandon their current directions and head to the Pacific Northwest to try something new. They performed as an acoustic duo in the coffee shops and bars of Port Angeles, WA as “Tongue and Groove” and were an immediate hit. T&G eventually added several other members, went electric and evolved into one of the Olympic Peninsula’s favorite bands, releasing three CD’s and playing everything from late-night Dead-esque jams in local bars to the Northwest Folklife Festival in Seattle.

Over the course of five years, T&G’s gig schedule became too busy for some of the members working full-time jobs and the band’s momentum quickly waned. With the confidence and experience gained from fronting a successful band and hungry to keep performing, Kim and Jason returned to their acoustic roots...

From his interest in the Grateful Dead and Jerry Garcia in particular, Jason was led to the pure, rustic sounds of old-time music and claw-hammer style banjo while Kim explored bass and old country-style rhythm guitar. With the discovery of contemporary old-time influenced artists like Gillian Welch, Old Crow Medicine Show, Be Good Tanyas, and The Reeltime Travelers, Kim and Jason were inspired in a new direction and Deadwood Revival was born.

Described as “pure, honest, passionate, and refreshing” DwR’s performances sound much fuller than one would expect from a duo and include foot-stomping hoe-downs... imaginative, cleverly arranged covers... and original tunes that embody Kim and Jason’s impeccable vocal blend and old-time simplicity wedded to their undeniable influences nurtured by 20th century American radio.

Jake Schepps & Expedition
Saturday November 4

Jake Schepps and Expedition is a versatile stringband featuring banjoist and composer Jake Schepps, Greg Schochet on archtop guitar and mandolin, violinist Ryan Drickey and Eric Thorin on bass.  With engaging, dynamic material that reflects the Colorado aesthetic of roots music, we try to offer something for everybody, (especially if you dig the banjo…).  We play originals and standards in the swing, honky-tonk, and bluegrass/old time genres, but with intricate composition, counterpoint, and improvisation more characteristic of jazz and classical styles.

Vintage Guitar Magazine says Jake “…has the kind of sophisticated musical sensibility usually associated with a jazz player,” and Sing Out Magazine declares “Expedition” “…is nothing less than excellent music.”

Benny Galloway &
The Wayword Sons
Thursday November 16

The Wayword Sons is one of the most exciting new bands in today‘s music scene. Combining the critically acclaimed songwriting of Benny Galloway and stellar musicianship within the unique instrumentation of keyboards, dobro, acoustic guitar and upright bass, The Wayword sound is truly something special.

Though the band is newly formed, many music fans find familiar faces and sounds in the Wayword Sons. Benny’s musical association with Yonder Mountain String Band, whose 2003 recording, “Old Hands” features only songs written by Benny, has made him a cult hero among Yonder’s multitude of fans. Benny has handpicked a cohesive unit of some of the finest young musicians in the country to play his music the way that it should be heard.

Calling upon traditional bluegrass as a jumping off point for musical experimentation, the Sons create a sound that is jammy, yet tight, lyrical, yet improvisational, and tender, yet rock solid.  Bound by the love of songs and the chance to play them together, The Wayword Sons’ genre-bending live sound is an unlikely combination of old and new, sweet and salty, … as creative and unique as it is hard to define.

Since forming in the fall of 2005, The Wayword Sons have made a large impact throughout the country. In the band’s short existence, they have been from coast to coast and have been invited to play such reputable festivals as The Telluride Bluegrass Festival, where they wowed the audience with their mainstage set and sold out a nightgrass show in town, The Northwest String Summit, and The Bristol Rhythm and Roots Reunion, where they were called a favorite new band to the festival’s huge, diverse audience.

While fans are falling in love with the live sound of the Wayword Sons, musicians and peers are also taking note of the creative and inherently musical nature of the band. When Jeff Austin of Yonder Mountain String Band needed a band to fatten up his sound for a headlining festival set in the spring of 2006, he called upon The Sons. Later that fall, Vince Herman of Leftover Salmon did the same for a run of shows in the Southeast.

The band’s first album, “Poor Boy’s Delight” (Hamshack Records, August, 2006), being distributed nationally by MRI/RED Distribution, debuted in the top ten of Billboard Magazine’s bluegrass charts and is a diverse collection of original songs.  Representing a combination of soft, tender tunes that spill into intense jams, this album speaks to The Wayword Sons’ success and showcases their ability to play host to a fusion of many new sounds.  Commenting on the band’s first album, Galloway looks to the future: “To think that we all met in a small town out in southwestern Colorado is right around mind bending. Chance, luck, or fate and you hold in your hand this collection of songs and stories we call Poor Boy's Delight. I can only imagine the next batch of ideas rendered to melody at the hands of the Wayword Sons.”  Boasting energy from their newly formed success and celebration of their new album, The Wayword Sons continue to amaze audiences and enlarge their rapidly growing fan base.
